All was catered, everyone has draw there paper no one has still won The Lottery. There was one last man, who was going to draw the last paper, everyone was nervous all was still; in the air you could smell the anxious. Suddenly Mr. Summers says “All right, people. You can now open your papers!”. The village people, was exited everyone looked at each other, and suddenly in a hurry everyone’s opens the slip of paper. It was The Hutchinson ho won the Lottery, and is stoned in the end of story.
Sometimes is surprising when you know the meaning of others culture. Everything can look good from the outside, but when you know the true the darkness are little town can have you may be surprised, as in the novella “The lottery”.
We are in small silent village where everything looks good, people are working and children are playing there games. Is it in England 27 th June, 1948, there is about 300 inhabitants in this small village. The story takes place in a square about of post office.
There is are hiaraci of people who are the most powerful, in this village a man called Joe summer is the man with the darkness and all the power. He owns the largest business, and he is a bit ironic because he wears normal close like jeans and clean white shirt. People in the village call him Mr. Summers. He has no children, his wife is a scold. He is the man who comes in with black box.
The second most powerful man, who is Mr. Summer’s right hand, is the postmaster Mr. Graves. He is Mr. Summer’s assistant during The Lottery. He is his helper.
The grocer Mr. Martin is the third most powerful man, because he is the only grocer for three hundred people.
Old man Warner is the man has been there for all the generations, he has seen these entire lotteries. Who knows everything about The Lottery.
Tessie Hutchinson is the one who wins the lottery and is stoned. She is not the typical British housewife. She is the opposite, she is after her husband all the time she, and the most important thing is that she arrives late to The Lottery. She not typical because these women in the village are home, and cleaning and taking care of their children and husband.
Normal woman does not draw the slip of paper, but for Janey Dunbar she has to draw for her husband because he has a leg broken, for Jack Watson who is a kid, he also draws for his family because his father is dead.
The lottery is a old tradition but, some people in the village is tired of this tradition and some are giving up the tradition. Other villages near them has already giving this old tradition, that’s why Mr. and Ms. Adams is suggesting to giving up this Lottery cause other already has done it. But they don’t dare to share their thoughts with others, they may be afraid to be punished. And punishment could be death.
The hierarchy in the village is that in each family the father is in charge or the head of the family the children and wife does not have any authority. The women is wearing faded dresses and sweaters, and they exchange gossip ant went to their husband.
In the beginng of the text the children achts normal. Boy’s act rude, girl’s act like girls. Men are joking, but not laughing just smiling, because there is some kind of tension.
I will relate this story to the The Obelisk, who also takes place in England. Is about are couple Ernest and Hilda. Before they got married Hilda was a typist. And Ernest is a teacher and teaches in grammar. Hilda is not that happy for Ernest, because he keeps correcting her grammar, but every time he does that Hilda don’t mind, she may think that he only does it because he loves her. Hilda is also taller than Ernest, and she think a lot about what other People thinks about them. “She was larger herself: tall enough to make them look funny as they walked down the esplanade, but not tall enough to look dignified when she was alone.” . But during the story Hilda is tired of their married nothing really happens, and she need something to do this married more exiting. That’s when she meets the two sailors Stan and Tiny. Stan is this big and beautiful man, just like a man Hilda likes. He has everything she wants. She makes lots of fantasies about him and Stan and falls in love with him, even though she nearly knows him. Suddenly Hilda and Stan have sex. The weird thing is that Ernest also may have a intimate relationship with the other sailor Tiny, we don’t know that for sure. The Obelisk is the place we they are going in the end of the story, but when they arrives there, The Obelisk is gone.
Choosing this story is because Hilda is like Tessie, they are not the “typical” British woman. They are both married, but they don’t obey their husbands. Tessie doesn’t cook, clean or taking of their children’s or husband. Hilda does not really like her husband, and she can’t live like an normal British woman, who is home and taking care etc… She fell in love with another, just because she felt like her married was to boring, and after her affair with Stan. She is still with Ernest, like something never happened.
