The familiar

Witchpower is not always a bad thing. In this story written by the famous american writer Andre Norton (1912-2005), Andre Norton convince the reader that development is a progress that never is to late to do.

The town “Quirth”, where the little girl Jeseca lives, are is beeing attacked by soldiers. She fled with her toy-cat named Fossi. On their way down into the dark chill depths beaneath her house, Fossi gaved Jeseca orders by a invisible “bond” between them. They had a connection so they could hear what the other was thinking, Jeseca wasn’t aware of this bond they shared, or the fact that Fossi not was was not a normal toy. Afterwards Fossi reveals it's true identity to Jeseca; Fossi is not a toy, but a talking, living cat with magical powers, which whose task is to educate Jeseca to a wyse (vis? I så fald wise) woman. Fossi showed Jeseca a magical sight through a dark mirror into the outer streets. She cried when she saw her housemaid, Ursilla were laying down dead on the cobbles. She saw also also saw the soldier, who killed Ursilla, were about to kill an infant, but then a wise power came out of Jeseca’s hand holding a knife. She cracked the mirror down the middle, and saw that she had stabbed the soldier through his heart. Now she become aware of the power she had. Jeseca was not a child anymore but faced by Fossi as a woman. Fossi was now going to help her learn more about the powers and to control them.

Andre Norton has chosen a first person narrator, in the shadow of the magical cat Fossi. This means that the story is told subjectively from Fossi; Fossi’s point of view.
Fossi is in a disguise as a red-brown toycat. The first impression we get is that it is a lazy cat, because of Fossi’s waiting to educate Jeseca and its waiting to show her its true identity. The next impression we get of Fossi is bossyness, when Fossi is giving Jeseca all the orders. Maybe could it it could also be a sign on Fossi’s helping figure, because Jeseca is actually seaking these orders, when she don’t   doesn't know what to do, when they fled. Fossi could therefore also be characterized as an intelligent cat, since it always know what to do in stressed situations. We also know that Fossi has magical powers, which is shown several times. For example, the invisible bond between Fossi and Jeseca, or when Fossi opens the secret passage in the basement of the house. Jeseca was the special one and was selected by Fossi, because she had enough of talent to be the wyse   (igen, wise?) woman. Fossi has rejected generations of the mothers in the family. You could call Fossi a demanding cat. I’ve been unable to set a gender on Fossi, that we don’t hear anything about it.
The first impression of Jeseca, would be that she is a little girl of about 10- years. The reason to that I say 10 years is because she is walking around with a stuffed toycat. But I could be wrong, the reason could be; (den sætning er overflødig) Jeseca may be lonely, as Fossi describes her on page 57 line 22: "Once more she adressed me, her voice that of the lonely child she had been when I had first moved myself into her life." So maybe Jeseca isn’t the little child we think she is. She is may just be lonely.

The place, where the story takes place is in a merchant-house. That could give us a clue about, when the story takes place. With the Objects as an the lantern, the stuffed toy, and the bandoleer don't make us go not far back in time. The story could takes take place in the 1920's in the time, where Andre Norton was a child.

A theme to of the story could be development. Jeseca was the lonely child with a stuffed toy, but in the end she became becomes a wyse (wise?) woman with a real friend, who have has a mission to complete.
