The snapper

The snapper is a text by Roddy doyle and takes place in Ireland. The story is about a middleclass family who lives in Ireland. The family consists of the farther Jimmy Sr. the mother Veronica and the six children Jimmy Jr, Sharon, Tracy, Linda, Darren and Les. The laungege in the text is written with Irish accent and some of the words were a bit troubling because it was in slang, special the father’s language is very modern because he uses words like Fair play, Fuck in, snotty and so on.
Quote: Did yeh? Fair play to yeh, said Jimmy Sr. - I’d never’ve thought o’ tha’ :” and “will yeh listen to the’ fuckin’ eejit, said his father”

The maincharacters is the daughter Sharon and the Father Jimmy, because the dialog is between them and sometimes we here a little bit of the mother.
Sharon is 20 years old and still lives with her parents and her siblings. She has just tell her parents that she is pregnant, the father jimmy seems to have a very good relationship with Sharon, because he takes it very easy when she told that she is pregnant. He is not so heavy at the beginning, it’s comes as a chock to him but he takes it very easy, he said to Sharon that she is only twenty and and that he is shocking.

The relationship between Jimmy and Veronica seems to be a little bit difficult.
Jimmy doesn’t really like the idea about that Sharon is pregnant, but the way he reacted at wasn’t anger ore rage, it was more easy, it seemed not normal for me that a father reacted like that when his daughter come home and say that she is pregnant. But he also works like a helpful and careful type.
Quote: Good girl said Jimmy - Mind yourself against the table there.:”
Veronica seems to be the mother of the house the responsible and sensitive person. She takes it all very easy she didn’t come with any comments, and she answer the father very cold when he ask her what she think of it. Quote:” It’s shockin’, said jimmy Sr again,- so it is. Wha’ do you think o’ this? He was talking to veronica. I don’t know said veronica. Is tha’ the best yeh can do veronica.? Well what do you think? :” in this quote we see that veronica is on tap at the word ”you” which means that she will finally hear his opinion, perhaps because he does not participate much in the family, but tries to act like the man of the house even when he knows that veronica is the ”leader”. I think that Veronica is the one who tries to raise the children and she have a very good realationship with Sharon, because Sharon choose to tell Veronica that she is pregnant before she tells Jimmy.

The conversation took a turn when Jimmy ask Sharon who the father is, because Sharon will not tell the parents who the father is. Maybe because the father to Sharon’s baby is Mr Burgess who is a middle-aged neighbour and he is probably much older then she is and maybe a married man so Sharon is scared that the relationship between him and his wife (if he has one) will be destroyed and she is probably scared of the fathers reaction if she says who the father is. But because she didn’t say who the father is, Jimmy feel himself getting a bit angry, and it seems that he cant control himself when he becomes angry because his anger goes beyond Jimmy Jr. citat: They heard Jikky Jr. from the up in the boys’ room. This is Jimmy Rabbite - all - over Ireland. Will yeh listen to the fuckin’ eejit said his father. Leave him alone said veronica:” . It does not stand long after a few minutes he calm down again, and the conversation between them it’s okay again. Jimmy is really trying to get it out of Sharon, but nothing helps. She didn’t say it and the conversation ended. Jimmy had not been at the birth of any of his own children. He feels bad about not being there for his wife. And I think that he realized his mistake when Sharon tells him that she is pregnant so maybe he change a bit to the caring father who is concerned for the well being of his daughter.

The topic sences in the story is Love, Family and religion. The story is much about how a middleclass family handled a problem when your young daughter get pregnant and how to react on this problem. Maybe the family is religious so it’s a big mistake if the daughter takes a abort, because abortion is not the right ting to do when you are religious.
