                                                                            Fiction versus Non-Fiction
There are innumerable ways of expressing thoughts and ideas and one makes use of them every time one communicates. However when it comes to writing there are roughly speaking only two opportunities to express oneself – with the use of fiction or non-fiction.
   Non-fiction is widely used when one is dealing with descriptions of reality such as actual events. Non-fiction usually appears in for example non-literary prose and historical writings and is mainly based on facts. Fiction on the other hand is an expression of the author’s imagination and communicates through symbols and images. Therefore the understanding of fiction is very personal and no unambiguous answers can be given to a fictitious text. Fiction is often a reflection of the real world though everything is made up and fictitious texts can be characterized as invented stories. For that reason fiction is mostly expressed in stories and poems just as in movies.
   The short story “Abduction” by Shelagh Delaney is an example of literary fiction. Even though the plot seems very realistic it is undoubtedly fiction because of its vivid and imaginative descriptions. Had it been non-fiction like in “Adler’s Psychoanalytic ideas on development” by Marcia Wehr it would have been more brief and precise with focus on scientific and theoretical explanations. The two texts deal with the same issues expressed with two different approaches – a fictitious and a non-fictitious.
   However the difference between fiction and non-fiction has with time become less obvious. Writers of fiction have developed to write realistically about true events just as non-fiction writers embellish the truth to elaborate their message. Nevertheless fiction differs from non-fiction in its descriptive and imaginative style of writing.
