Abstract

This paper examines how the American school system is structured compared to the Danish. It applies to both good and bad sides. One of the reasons why the two school systems are so different is the cultural differences in each country. Beyond this, I have looked at the advantages and disadvantages of the two school systems. To come to a conclusion, I have used a hermeneutist and analytic perspective.

I then outlined a brief summary of the American school systems structure. This showed clearly the differences of the structure. All education in Denmark is paid by the government. In the U.S. the education is paid until high school. If you perform well, you can apply for a scholarship. If your performance during high school was average, your parents must pay for your college education. This creates an inequality in the American society between rich and poor. In addition, there will be elucidated the cultural differences, that have created the American school system like it is known today.
The major cultural difference is the involvement of the state. Americans do not need a government to tell them what to do. This is a nation of individualists and hard working people.

The education in United States does not look anything like the Danish. Their teaching is based on testing, from child until they leave college. There have almost no oral exams, this favor children who are good at taking tests. In Denmark we are not use to be tested as mush and it appears clearly when Danish students are being tested, since they do not perform as good as expected. Students in the U.S. are actually better testers than the Danes.
Overall, there is a big difference from teaching to the structure of the two school systems. American students learn from an early age that they have to make an extras effort to reach the top, in contrast to the Danish school system which is based on equality.
