A woman both mother and wife, get the terrrible news about her husband. A soldier, a Constable. William McGrath, has ben killed in an accident where he had come upon two men booby-trapping a car, fleds at his challenge, and he knowing the danger, had tried to push the car clear of the street, but the car blowed along with him.
The wife of the dead soldier, reacts hard on this, and get dizzy but the policemen, who told the message grabs her, while she sees the world change into an ugly shape. The son also reacts hard on the message about the death of his father. He gets angry and ask about if it was ”the ruddy provoes” who did it. He gets angry and run into his room and slam the door. The neighbor Reverend Thomas McBride, comes by to see how she is doing after he had heard about the death of her husband. But she wont talk with anyone. The things arround her is described and underlines the fact how alone she feels and the sorrow of her dead husband. She tries to deal with her feelings, and know she has to talk with her son Billy. Who think his dad should have shot them, he ment caused the situation.
The title of the story, is what the dad used to say: ”it was up to us ordinary people, to keep the faith” which also is the message of the story. But the son means the father was wrong in his dad opinion. The son blames the Catholics, and call them papists as he generalizes them with their neighbors. Some old friends comes on visit to see how, the mother, Jean is doing. This is where we get the first introdution of the name of the mother. Siobhán is the name on the comforting friend, in this ”scene” we also get an introduction on how angry and mad the son really is. When he is standing face to face with the ones he ment was the cause of his father sudden death. She also finds it hard to control her emotions, slams the door as her son, while saying her husband was wrong in the sentence by keeping the faith, he was now dead!. And Billy comments: ”That’s right, The murdering Provos”. (side 32 – 2.slide) when the husband – William Mc.Grath. get buried, the neighbor Rev. McBride tells the mother at the funeral, that her husband had maid peace, but she comments him, in a rude way: ”How do you know?, and where is our peace? ” she breaks out in crying and the boy Billy, tells her,” that dad wouldn’t like.. ” She is very sad and cant help her self. The strong and friendly hands of Siobhán Culrose lifts her up and hold her but as the boy, Billy also starts crying, Siobhán holds them both as if she was some kind of goddess, their protectior. Who Billy earlier ment was the one who was in fault of his father sudden death, the hate he has build inside himself, seems to be gone, since he let her hold him, like that.
After the Ceremony Jean wents through the rituals, but still in grief over her dead husband, it was the time, when he used to come home from work. But when the son Billy comes to her, he tells her about Jamie Culroses dad and that he had been shot by the army in Derry, and wants to find Jamie - Billy looks more clear on the things then in the beginning of the story, he had found out he had something in common with the boy Jamie, they had both lost their fathers in ”the army”. Billy forgives Jamey, and is not filled with anger or hate anymore, he runs happy out of the front door to find Jamie. While Billy is gone to play with Jamey, Siobhán Culrose comes on visit and brought a ”wee drop of port”. Jean and Siobhán talks with each other about ”why they spend so much of it hatin’ each other?” which Jeans husband used to say. they get some more port, and talk about England where the politicians sigh and speechify about ”the Irish question”, sure, and what do they know?” they’ve found something to be agree in, Jean comments ”they say, if we do this for the Catholics and that for the Protestants it’s a new initiative, but, Siobhán, it’s up to us to keep the faith” – they drink some more port and ”will keep the faith” from now and ’ever and together.
The story takes place in northern Ireland where both Protestants and Catholics lives. The theme in this story could be religion, how much religion affects them and their belief in everything. Forgiveness, forgive eachother for everything there had happened and ben said, and move on, meet the enemy and understand eachother.
Compared with the text Newspaper Clippings which shows examples on new report on acts of terror in Northern Ireland, this text show some hint of solutions to the sad sate of affairs. Example the first with the news about the shooting of a Catholic taxi driver at his home in Belfast, the hate between the two faiths must have ben very intense, when gunmen is walking the streets waiting for their next victim.
In the text ”to keep the faith”, it all ends good. After having the hate to eachother
but the fact that the stuff in the newspaper actually had happen, is terrible, killed because of having a different kind of religion is disgusting, it is also what there is happening in todays Irak, people bombing eachother because of insolence of the things there had ben said about religion and there for crossed the line, with bumping and killing inoccent people, only shows how crazy people in the world, really is.
