MOT time

The abridged short story MOT time is written by Hope Massiah in 200.
In the story we are presented to the main character Jenny who his visiting her father called Victor. He is 70 years old and retired.
He has a grip on everything huh regards cars and he repairs on cars before they go to the MOT. I think that the father struggle to express
himself to the daughter quote: ” “Your mother... she was the only girl in Bayfield who... who could drive a car. She was big, a tomboy...
and she could drive a car. You girls take after her.” This is probably not why he married her in the first place but he can’t explain why so he makes up some silly explanation.

Even for a long time ago, jenny’s parents divorced and this episode has affected she and hers siblings in a way which makes them unwilling to
speak to the father, except Jenny, who only talks to him when he has fixed her car. Jenny is one of three siblings, and she is only the one
who still has contact with the father. Jenny is 30 year old and has a young son called Omar. In my opinion Jenny seems to be a very
strong woman, because she didn’t give up so easy. Besides this, she is the first black woman in the south east to work as a banking manager.
This shows us a strong side of her. Jenny and her siblings do not have a father any more, and when jenny’s boyfriend left her, she called her father,
Perhaps because she think that he is the one who can help her. But the father does not help her at all, no talking, not any words of consolation at
all and it is clearly to see that he is not the father he once was. quote:” He came to collect her, and Jenny had cried noisy desolate tears all the way.
He had said nothing, made no attempt to comfort her”. I think that this quotation is ambivalent concerning the father – daughter relationship.
At one side, the father does not care much about her daughter and he only drives her home to her mother because she, after all, is his daughter.
In connection with this, one can say that he is not father enough to invite her home to his place and have some quality time with her and
play the loving and caring father he once was. Jenny’s father left their mother for another woman when Jenny and her siblings were small.
The other woman called Annet is younger then victor Annet comes from Barbados and she has two children Mark and Michelle.
The relationship between the father, jenny and her siblings seems not to be good. It seems that he is not interested in their lives and that he
broke all the contact with the family. An example of this is that he cannot remember his own children’s birthdays
quote: ” “Her father looked puzzled. “It was her birthday? I always get her and Angela mixed up. Pamela is ... July, Angela is ...
” “November” “And you is August. You will be thirty ...?” “One” . But on the other hand, this may be because he is old and does not remember well.

The main team in this story is a relationship between a father and his daughter. After victor left the mother for another woman,
jenny finds the relationship between she and the father very difficult, because she cannot be close with him like before.
But jenny is in better relationship with the father compared to the other siblings. She still wants to have contact with him but doesn’t want a
close relationship with his new family she doesn’t like them because they stole her father from the mother, her and the siblings.
A special thing in the text is in the ending when the time has come to say goodbye to the father. I think she in a way wants to stay
because she miss the good time and when she sees the raisin-like mole on his fathers shoulder she remembers her childhood and the
time when her father was there for her. I think that this is a symbol of the good times they once had.

I have perspective my essay to One flesh a poem written by Elisabeth Jennings in 1967. The poem is about a child witch parents
is divorced. The poem is very similar to the text ”MOT time” because they both is about a relationship between the parents that once
had been perfect without problems and now there is nothing of the good back there is just coldness left.
