Wounded Knee has become the headquarters of the American Indians’ new countermovement, because this was where their forefathers suffered the final defeat in the fight against the white mans advance.
The 29th of December 1890 about 300 unarmed men, women and children from the Sioux tribe were slaughtered by USA’s 7th cavalry regiment.
This decimation of one of America’s strongest tribes resulted in that the Indians had to watch helplessly while the Yankees conquered the Wild West.
The story behind the massacre, as it is described in Dee Browns bestseller “Bury my heart in Wounded Knee”, is the following:
A medicine man by the name Wovoka had foreseen that the Indians, by the help of the magic in a particular tribal dance, could drive away the white man and at the same time make the buffaloes return to the American plains.
Before a year had passed the white officials who administrated the Indian reservations banned the dance and that led to several armed episodes. The 15th of December the famous Chief Sitting Bull was arrested as one of the guilty. He was the one who had led the force of Sioux- and Cheyenne Indians who wiped out General Custer and his cavalrymen in 1876. Sitting Bull was shot by the men who were supposed to arrest him.
Furious because of Sitting Bulls death, Chief Big Foot led his warriors out of the reservation a few days later to join a bigger force under Chief Red Cloud.
The 28th of December the 7th cavalry regiment caught up with the two groups of Indians near Wounded Knee; they were disarmed and accused for having left the reservation without permission. The Indians were driven together on a small area and the soldiers formed a ring around them. Early next morning a single shot was fired. No one knows by whom. The shot made the soldiers open fire with everything they had of heavy weapons and primitive machineguns, and a little later all the Indians laid dead on the ground. They were buried in a mass grave.
Today about 10.000 Sioux-Indians live in the Pine Ridge-reservation, which they themselves call Red Clouds country.

man kan som regel ikke skrive: resulted in that, resulted in the fact that...
as one of the guilty (leaders) one of the guilty bør ikke stå alene.
accused of (aldrig accused for)
lay dead on the ground.

Jeg forstå simpelthen ikke linie to i svar nr to.
