Wrong Footing

Love has always existed and I think it always will exist because though we sometimes think that love is very complicated to handle and we hate the feeling of love neither can we live without it and we like to be in love and to feel love. Therefore plays love an important role in our life.
In the English short story “ Wrong Footing” written by Lesley Glaster, 2001, we see the new and exciting love between two people. But even they love each other though they don’t match together and the one part tries hard to adapt into the circumstances of the relationship.

The story takes place in South England because in the story the place “Stanedge edge” is mentioned and it’s close to Bramford, which is a small town outside Ipswich and the town Edale is near Sheffield, which is in South England. The time of the story is from April when they meet to March where their relationship ends. In this short story is the narrator secret and omniscient e.g. l. 41+98 +135.

The main character is the woman called Meg. I think she is about 25-30 years old because she talks about “the one” and usually you do that when you want to settle down with someone.
Meg is not spontaneous, she wants to be prepared and she not likes when something surprises her e.g. when she calls Jeff for the first time. (l.58-60). I believe she is a sophisticated woman and she is very perfect e.g. concerning the cooking. Jeff describes her also as unrufflable and his first impression of her was that she looks like an Icemaiden. She is a nice and decent girl. (l.107-110)
She has friends but as she irritated mentions are all of her friends busy and have not the time to be together with her. One day she is bored and she remember Jeff and calls him. She isn’t very much interested in him e.g. 48-49 “She examined the card. His firm did something with software and his name was Jeff. But he was not her type”. But she changes her opinion about him because suddenly she feels alone and her friends are busier being couples than to be together with her and Meg also wants someone to be together with and she chooses Jeff. She wants to find the one and only and she even talks with her friends about Jeff could be the perfect one.
They don’t match together because she is relaxed and wants to enjoy long drowsy mornings in bed in weekends whereas Jeff is very active and wants to get most impossible out of the day and they also have such a different view at life qualities. I suppose that Meg knows deep down that they are very different from each other e.g. l. 111-112; “He looked too big and real against her apricot walls and cream settee.” Here she self says indirectly that they don’t match together. Another symbol of their difference you find e.g. in line 80-83; “Out on the moors the wind was cold, much colder than the city breeze. The shoes, fine for streets and parks, were useless; they filled up with scratchy bits and she jarred her ankle on tangled roots.” Meg is a person who lives in the city and even she likes the nature she doesn’t want to be in it all the time like Jeff. Jeff can’t take it easy and he just can’t sit and relax in several days then he gets restless and he has to walk and it’s also like he has a kind of unknown longing e.g. 16-17; “Not that he’s violent. Not at all. Just full of appetite and relish. More than that, of hunger for something just out of his reach.” She also talks about food and also here they are not agreeing because Jeff likes raw food like sushi and tartare and this makes her sick and she thinks it’s very disgusting. She talks about the movie they have seen together “Reservoir dogs” an action movie and of course hate Meg the movie and Jeff likes it because he is the one who wants action in his life.

I believe that their relationship mostly is build on their sexual relations e.g. l.129; “ …., she thought he would be better off with a dog. But at night, between the sheets, she took it back”. The relationship last so long because of Meg’s effort. In the beginning she wants to work hard to get a perfect relationship and to get Jeff happy and satisfied with her. She cooks delicious food and she is going with him when he is walking even doesn’t like it. At last she dares to say no for walking and when she finally do it she feels a huge relief. (l.151-153) But now begins the relationship to be unsteady.

The heading “ Wrong footing” is important for the story and we first hear about a wrong footing, when she calls Jeff for the first time and she thought that he isn’t at home and she gets surprised when he answers the phone. This “wrong footing” is mental and in a way it starts their relationship.
But the wrong footing is also in the end of the relationship, but here it’s physical. It’s when she chooses not to stick by the path and walk her own way and then she is ending in a dangerous bog. Therefore you can say that the wrong footing is an important factor in their relationship.

In the short story you also find some symbols e.g. that Meg mentions that climbers stand out in the rock could be a symbol of their relationship how different they are to each other and how they stand out from each other. Another symbol is the path in the moor. You have to follow the path and not stray from it because life is treacherous and you must listen to yourself and be realistic about your feelings.
