The meaning of the expression “a backpacker” is in my eyes a traveler who travels on a low budget, armed with only a toothbrush and a passport. They are avoiding places stuffed with people, and goes after the small hidden oases. That’s not just my opinion, but more the definition of backpacking.
The text”Backpackers hit the tourist trail” by Sarah Hall, is totally opposite of my and the English encyclopedia “Britannica” idea of backpacking. According to her, have today’s Backpackers turned into the totally opposite of what the “Backpacking feeling” was all about. Today’s backpackers still hungers after adventures and unspoiled paradises. But they just end up in the “tourist-ghettos”, where you can get almost everything, no matter how far you are from your native land. Now they can see some some restorative pots in a museum, and afterwards get their favorite meal at Mc Donald’s. Before there were more challenge in backpacking, they were on a very tight budget, so they had to find other ways to come around. For example, hitchhiking from city to city, and then find a local tavern were they could buy some cheap food.
Maybe we are just ashamed of ourselves. That can Mark Moxon sign under to, in his story “Why I Travel”, were he run away from his too perfect friend. All furniture and equipment look like the same. just as Mark Moxon who ran away from his horribly British friends in “Why I Travel”. Maybe we have slowly come to realize that the capitalistic wonderland we have built up over a period of some hundred years may not be the way to go. We speak proudly of what our forefathers have achieved and feel bad about how the rest of the world suffer from famine.
In text 3 “Why I travel”by Mark Moxon, he describes one of his friends bathroom. A very expensive and too perfect bathroom filled with peach things. That’s a symbol of the modern society today. Everyone can afford a perfect bathroom, but for the same amount of money, we could bring the world poverty to an end. That’s the reason why Mark Moxon set out on a 33 months journey, to Australia, Oceania and Southeast Asia, in search of an alternative to the perfect bathroom. Another example of symbolism is in “Wanderlust” by Don George. The world outside where he lives is described as a classroom. This symbolizes that you cannot learn everything in a classroom, some things you have to learn by being in different places, and learning about other cultures by visiting them and connect or at least have some kind of contact with the locals.
