Hej Alle.

The poem ” City of Orgies” by Walt Whitman. And the poem ” New statue of liberty” by Emma Lazarus. And the last one Immigrants in our own land” by Jimmy Santiago Baca. You can see that the poems are from three different authors, but all of them want to give us an impression and a sensation by United states of America. They tell how it is to live in Americaa as immigrants. I will now analyse the three poems and see how the three authors look on America.
The two first poems are both about Newyork. The same in this poems is that Walt Whitman and Emma Lazarus both have a positive and favourable view on Newyork. They are talking about immigrants in Newyork, but in different ways. We could start with Emma Lazarus. She sees only on Newyork like freedom for everyone. She uses the statue of liberty as example: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.” Afther that she write that the statue of liberty will shine with her torch, so everybody can see that they are must welcome here.
Walt Whitman’s view is a little bit different. He loves the city, but he is not a part of it. He describe Newyork very colourful, so the impressions, you get, are that Newyork is a city, which is beautiful and a city which never sleeps. I think that the most important thing in the poem is the many sort of people which he talks about. He thinks that the immigrants are very happy to live in Newyork. Perhaps he has this view because he is an onlooker, and this way he doesn’t know the real face of the city.
Now to the last poem. This poem is about immigrants in USA. I think that the speaker in “Immigrants in our own land” is an immigrant. We don’t know which country, he comes from, but I am really sure that he is an immigrant because he talks about, how sat, despairing, disappointed and a little bit angry he is. I think that he feels that the new country has given him a lot of false promises. He talks about racial segregation, and how the new country exploit the immigrants to work very hard as slaves and paid them as cheep labour. He has hoped when he moves to an other country like America, he will get a better live with money and food. So you can say that all his dreems are broken
It is very clear to see that they all are talking about immigrants in the United States of America. But you can also see that there is different views on the country’s reputation, depending on whether it is an American, an onlooker or an immigrant.
