Statistics tell us that crime constantly takes place around us – in the local mall, at work, in our homes, and so on. It has now become a part of our everyday life – not just in the USA, but also in many other places in the world. But what underlies these criminal actions? In the light of this question I try to find an answer through this paper. First I explain four theories, which each gives an explanation for criminal conduct. Then I take a look at the descriptions of violent crime and the reasons to this from an analysis and interpretation of the two short stories - George Saunder’s Adams and Joe Miceli’s Taking leave. Afterwards I discuss the main characters’ conduct compared with the theories and evaluate whether they fit into the theories or not. In the end this leads to the conclusion that no theories precisely can fit into a criminal profile. In this connection I emphasize the fact that not everything has a logical explanation.
