A match which swung one way then the other built to a gripping conclusion at the Newport Centre after 11pm, and in the end it was Maguire who went through to a final clash with fellow Scot Higgins at the Wyldecrest Park Homes Welsh Open.

In the end, the Englishman had a chance to snatch it, but after potting an excellent long pink, he was left a close range back along the top cushion, but left it in the jaws. He conceded the frame - which brought a warning from referee Jan Verhaas.

Selby put that out of his mind to level in a scrappy fourth frame, then made a 65 to take the lead. Maguire hit back superbly with a 137 total clearance for 3-3, before an 88 from Selby put him back in front.

Frame eight was another drawn out affair lasting 34 minutes. It came down to a safety battle on the yellow, which Maguire won, clearing to the pink for 4-4. He then made a 109 to take the lead only for Selby's 90 to force the decider.

A loose break-off from Selby gave Maguire a chance, and he was quickly among the balls. Early in the break he potted two tremendous reds - one doubled to a centre pocket and one fired into a baulk corner. After that he kept his composure to build a 67 which proved enough.

"In the last frame you just want a chance, and when I got one I wanted to stay at the table as long as possible," said Maguire. "I could have played safe instead of going for the double, but I decided to go for it.

"Mark grinds it out and you have to scrape him off the table. It's not nice when you lose a game like that, but it was my turn to win this time.

"John and I are good friends but we are both professionals so that won't affect us tomorrow. We always have good games in practice and I'm sure tomorrow will be the same. The bragging rights are more important than the title!

"John's on a great run and even his bad game is very tough to beat. It's good just to get to a final but if I lose tomorrow I'll be devastated."
