Rettelse af min aflevering - evt. understregninger

26. september 2016 af Dinosaua - Niveau: B-niveau

Hej.

School Uniforms – English B

1.    Give an outline of the different views on school uniforms presented in the texts.

The article ‘’School Uniforms: Pros and Cons’’ are written by Ann Svensen. It discusses the expansion of school uniforms from California to Boston and New York City right in line. The article contains a case for uniforms implicating informal statistics that have shown a drop rate of 76 percent school crimes since 1994 in California’s Long Beach Unified School District, after an urban mandatory uniform policy. The article discusses pros and cons in proportion to the elimination of competition pressure and assaults committed by older kids on younger ones.  Educational experts say that uniforms are the issue behind the loss of children’s possibilities to express themselves freely.

The article ‘’School Uniform improves pupils’ behaviour both in and out of school’’ is written by Laura Clark. It concerns her arguments on school uniforms. She has written that school uniforms have the ability to improve pupils’ behaviour and increase the level of concentration. School uniforms have a secondary effect. This effect is to keep older pupils away from commenting on the youngers outfit. School uniforms prevent school bullying and create an increasingly better behaviour outside of school. Pupils are more aware of their behaviour in public, as uniforms are an instant identification of their school.

The last article ‘’School Uniforms: turning our kids into soulless conformists’’ is written by Suzanne Moore. It takes its starting point at Moore’s thoughts about school uniforms. In proportion to Clark, Moore was never a big fan of school uniforms. She states that the price of the uniform itself was an issue, due to the fact that she had financial problems as a younger woman. Evidently the uniform was to install her in a sense of oneness with her school, unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned. According to Moore uniforms cover up many social ills. Signifiers such as bags, phones, and pens reflect economic position. Moore discusses the loss of individuality for her child, due to petty rules about shirts. She calls it preparation for the real world, but yet through uniform thinking.

2.  How does Suzanne Moore argue for her views in text 3? Give examples from the text

Suzanne Moore is an award-winning columnist, and not a person with professional knowledge in the field of the following topic: school uniforms. Moore uses the ability to argue experiences and thoughts from her own personal life. She does not make use of any kind of surveys as well as statistics that clarifies her opinions. Reading the beginning of the article, Moore has a negative view on school uniforms. It is noticeable, as Moore never liked her own school uniform.

(Page 6, line 14-15)
‘‘unsurprisingly, I was never a fan
of my own school uniform…’’

Moore states an example of a personal life-experience.
(Page 6, line 28-31)
‘‘I bought myself some lime-green
plastic platforms. Weirdly they were
not acceptable as school shoes unless
my mum wrote a note’’

In this statement, Moore writes about a personal experience, when she attended school wearing uniforms. Moore makes use of Pathos, in connection with convincing and catching the readers.

 (Page 6, line 24-25)
‘‘The price of the uniform itself was an issue’’

Moore uses the statement to appeal to the readers’ feelings. It creates sympathy in proportion to Moore’s views. At the time, her life was affected by financial problems, and that had an impact on her, as her family couldn’t afford a school uniform. She had to attend a Saturday job, which solved the financial problems she was going through.  It makes the statement strong and catchy. As Moore is trying to go into details about her negative vision on school uniforms, it creates consequences.  Readers relate to her views and they begin questioning even more whether or not uniforms are a good idea or not.

3. Taking you starting point in text 2, discuss to what extent school uniforms may influence pupils’ behaviour.

The following article ‘’School uniform improves pupils’ behaviour both in and out of school’’  is written by Laura Clark. It involves pros concerning school uniforms. The journalist expresses that school uniforms are to prevent bullying, improve children’s behaviour outside the school, to increase the amount of concentration, as well as not having classmates to comment on their outfit, whether it is cool or not, as all students almost dress identically. The article mentions a lot of different positive views on school uniforms. My task is to discuss to what extent school uniforms may influence pupils’ behaviour.

The following example is that school uniforms are preventable against bullying. The survey made by Oxford Brookes University said that dress codes acted as a social leveller. It reduces the risk of children being picked on for their outfit. I personally see the argument as a trustworthy one, as a lot of people are bullied for their dress code. The aftermath of wearing the same outfits brings dress-bullying to an end. Cons would still occur, as the loss of individuality comes into existence. Another problem according to the article is social ills, as pupils’ find different ways to bully others, by judging people, because of their phones, bags, and pens etc. Pupils’ have different living conditions outside the school, and by that bullying could still occur outside the school, for instance, if students’ families are affected by poverty. There are very few opportunities to travel or to eat at a fancy restaurant and so on, as they cannot afford it.

By having school uniforms, it abolishes dissimilarities between pupils’. By that happening, it means pupils do not intend looking down on others. By comparison with schools who doesn’t make use of uniforms, it creates a lot of inequality, as people feel better than others, on behalf of their values.
According to the text, another important argument is lightened. School uniforms increase the amount of good behaviour, especially outside the school. As mentioned earlier, pupils’ are more aware of their behaviour in public, as uniforms are instant identification to their school.
