“2BR02b” is a short story written by Kurt Vonnegut.
The story takes place in a future society, the future United States. The world is no longer the world we know, but a world with some improvements. There is a cure for all diseases, and that is also including old age. There are no prisons, no slums, no insane asylum, no cripples, no poverty and no wars.
The world has now become too small for all the many people who now live on the tiny planet, and that is why they have population control. Population control is used to limit the population of the United States to a stable number, in this case it is forty million.
If you got any problem you can call the number “2 B R 0 2 B” (to be or not/nought to be). They will help you to commit suicide.
If you are going to give birth to a child then you must find a person who will volunteer to die.
Our main character is a man named Edward K. Wehling. He is waiting for his wife to give birth to three babies. He is the only man waiting.
“He was the only man waiting. Not many people were born a day any more.”
Because of the population control he is the only man waiting to be a father.
To get three babies Edward must find 3 persons, who will volunteer to die, and Edward has only found one and that is his own father.
In the same room sits a sardonic old man, about two hundred years old. He is painting the floor. He is painting a peaceful mural with famous doctors, nurses and Leora Duncan. Leora Duncan comes from the “Service Division of the Federal Bureau of Termination” to pose for the mural. Dr. Benjamin Hitz is the obstetrician. Dr. Hitz and Lerora Duncan know that Edward Wehling has not gathered enough volunteers to his three babies.
When they talked to Wehling about it, he took a revolver and shot them both and himself, to make room for his three children.
All this the painter saw, and decided to call “2 B R 0 2 B”, he got an appointment and the hostess said:
“Thank you, sir," said the hostess. "Your city thanks you; your country thanks you; your planet thanks you. But the deepest thanks of all is from future generations.”
I think the genre might be science fiction. Because the story is something you can’t believe on right now, but after many years this could maybe be the real world, the earth will be too small, because the human can’t die. But what I associate with science fiction is unimportant stuff, that I can’t believe or count on like Star Wars (hardcore science fiction) we can’t turn our world into some sort of “Star Wars” thing. But my point is that we will someday find a cure against old age and then we will end up like they do in “2 B R 0 2 B”.
