Most volunteers - and a not insignificant part of the ordinary conscript - had an idea that their participation in the war in Vietnam played the same role for world peace, as their fathers' efforts against Nazism during World War II had done. But the war in Vietnam was different. The conscripts were typically straight from high school and had an average age of 19 years - unlike the average age of 26 years during WWII.

Many knew the call bad enough how Vietnam was and could not understand why the country was at war. Communism was the enemy, but how did it look?

The period of service totaled one year, of which the soldiers were typically 8-9 months inVietnam. The largest proportion of time spent soldiers on bases, and few of the soldiers who died in Vietnam, died in actual fighting. The vast majority were killed by snipers and mines where the enemy could not be identified, and the killing is not reciprocated. This became very important for the morale among the American soldiers who were frustrated and distrustful towards all Vietnamese - even the civilians they were supposed to protect.
