The American dream or the American nightmare

The case about the double murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman has been called the biggest trial of the century in the US. The media’s interest in this case is not as much in the victims as in the principal defendant, O.J. Simpson, the biggest football player of the US throughout the time and the entire nations sports hero. The case contains all the ingredients of what some would call the American dream, while others would call it the pseudo-event of the century in the US.

The black O.J. Simpson is the soul of the American dream: He came from the worst slum district of the big city, he was delicate as child but fought himself out of the temptations of the ghetto and the criminality, got famous as running back and became a multi millionaire and all the American boys’ idol. Then he married the white, divinely beautiful Nicole Brown who he was married with for 17 years. The result of their marriage is two children who often are described with the misused word beautiful.

The background of what the Americans called the most mentioned double murder in the history is the following:

Some neighbours find Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend or lover killed the 12th of June in a pool of blood outside Nicole’s house in Los Angeles fashionable suburb Brentwood. They are brutally stabbed to death with several stabs from a knife. Nicole has for instance almost had her throat slit. The focus of attention is quickly turned to O.J Simpson who hasn’t got an alibi at the time of the homicide. The question from the medias is a unanimously: Is O.J. able to kill in jealousy?

He can’t be tracked down but there happens something a few days after the murder on Larry King’s live show on CNN of vital importance for millions of viewer’s interest in the case. Larry King is interrupted in his conversation about the double murder with some lawyers. The viewer’s get live pictures from a helicopter, which follows a white Ford Bronco on the highways towards Los Angeles. O.J. sits in the back with a revolver loaded with live cartridges while the car is driven by O.J.’s friend of many years; Al Cowlings. Who will O.J. possibly shoot, where are they going?
