Sunday in the Park
A:
Sunday in the park is about a family who visiting a park. It is Morton, his wife and their kid, Larry. Morton reads Times Magazine section on the bench with his wife. Larry is playing with a boy in the sandbox, but suddenly the boy starts to throw spadeful sand on Larry. Larry’s mother tries to tell him that is wrong, but he didn’t stop. Joe gets his fathers endorsement to throwing the sand, because it is a public playground and he can do what he wants. Morton, who is a university teacher, tries to convince Joe’s father, who is a very big man, that Joe’s conduct is unacceptable, even thought it is a public playground. Joe’s father refuses to stop his son’s bad conduct and eventually Morton leaves the park with his family, though Larry is not happy to leave the park. Finally think Morton that fight wouldn’t have done or prove anything. Larry cries very loud and Morton wants to discipline him but his wife stops him.
B:
- Comparison of Morton and the big man
Morton is a university teacher and a man who doesn’t participate much in the active life outside: “Morton was so city-pale, cooped up all week inside the gray factorylike university” (page 97). Morton reads Times Magazine section on the bench. He meets the big man, who is Joe’s father, because of Larry’s and Joe’s confrontation. The big man is reading comics on a bench few feet away. The difference is very clear; a pleasant person meets an ignorant person, who I think is proletarian, the intellectual person meets the muscular person. Morton is very heated, but he can not handle the big man, even though he is “right”. Every time Morton tries to talk, the big man interrupts with: “aw, yeah and shut up” (page 98).
- The theme
Morton’s family and the big man in the park are two families that are in clear opposite to each other socially. So I think “social difference” is the important theme in this story. A confrontation between them proves that; word is not the best weapon.
- The mothers reaction to the episode
The mother tries to stop Joe with throwing of sand at Larry. She tells Joe that throwing with sand is incorrect, but Joe does not care what the mother tells him. Larry’s mother is looking for Joe’s mother or nurse, but nobody is in conspicuous. But later she finds that the man on the bench is Joe’s father. Larry’s mother expects that his father gets him stop it, but instead to get him stop it, he tells Joe that he just can continue with throwing sand. The mother feels weak, and the confrontation begins.
- The ending
