a.)
The story is about a family who is in the park in a late afternoon Sunday. In the corner of the park there is a playground in which the son of the family, Larry, is playing with sand. Suddenly another child starts throwing sand on him. This is where all the problems begin. Because soon after when the boy threw sand again Larry’s mother sharply told him not to do so. This resulted that his father finally responded. But not in a reasonable way. He said to his boy that he could throw as much sand as he wanted because it was a public playground. This is where Larry’s father, Morton, take place in the story. When he tried to stood up for his wife and convince the man that he was wrong in letting his child throw sand although the playground was public, the man wouldn’t listen to him and started to invite Morton to a fight. But a small man as Morton wasn’t prepared on such things and had to leave not to get beaten. In the end, it is obviously that the mother is disappointed with her husband.
b.) A comparison of Morton and the big man in the park.
If you look at the two men, you can see that they are as different as they can get.
Morton is cleaver and educated, he is wearing glasses, (which could be symbolized as the man being cleaver), and he is reading the “Times Magazine” which is a conservative and serious paper. This shows that Morton is interested in politics and the society. I.e. you get the impression that Morton is the “intellectual type.” Morton is also a small man which perfectly matches the fact that he is intellectual and afraid of fighting.
The big man (Joes father): He is a total different type than Morton. He is big, muscular aggressive, and rude which you for example can see when he spits. He doesn’t seem to mind his child a lot nor bring him up properly. To describe him in one word, I would use immature.
The mother’s reaction to the episode
As I mentioned in my summary, it is obvious that the mother gets very disappointed with her husband when he isn’t able to fight. Unfortunately she is letting it out on her son saying that she is disappointed with him and so on. And as she herself is thinking, she can’t wait to get home and do her familiar tasks. I think that this helps her get out whit her frustrations. But at the same time, she herself is thinking
The ending
At the end, you can see that Morton is frustrated too. He doesn’t know to whom he can let his frustrations out on, and as Larry keeps on crying he tries to let them out on him by “disciplining him”. But the mother stops him by saying the same as the Big man in the park said: “You and who else?” This shows that the mother sees a weakness in her husband. Like he can’t do anything for himself and no woman would have a husband like that. I think that this is a beginning on a very long discussion and maybe a fight between the husband and wife.
The theme
I think that there are many themes in the story. For example: upbringing children ore strong sides.
The reason for why I choose Upbringing children is because it is one of the main problems in the story. If the big man had cared a little more about his son then all the problems would be avoided. So a very important theme in the story is upbringing children.
The reason for why I also choose “strong sides” is: You get a very good impression of two very different types of being strong. One of them is being intellectual, and the other is being physically strong. In this particular story it is an advantage to be physically strong. But as the world have become a so cold “information society”, it is obviously better to be intellectual in most situations today.
