Familien Dobson bor i et gammelt hus nær kirken midt i byen.
Frank Dobson er kaptajn og sejler mellem Newcastle og Oslo.
Helen Dobson er husmor, men tre dage om ugen arbejder hun som bogholder.
Hun arbejder kun den halve dag. Når Frank er hjemme, nyder de at gå lange ture sammen, enten i byen eller i naturen.
De har to sønner. Den ene går stadig i skole; den anden er gift og bor i en anden by. Hans kone er sygeplejerske. De er nygifte, de venter barn, og de synes, livet er vidunderligt.
Den yngste søn ønsker at forlade skolen, men de fleste af hans lærere synes, at en intelligent elev bør gå videre til universitetet. Han vil hellere forsøge at få en karriere som soldat.

Helen Dobson is a housewife, but she works as a bookkeeper three times a week.
She works only the half day. When Fran is at home, they enjoy going long walks together, either in the town or in the nature.
They have 2 sons. The one goes still in school; and the other is married and lives in another town. His wife is a nurse. They are newly married, and the wait for a child, they mean that the life is wonderful.
The youngest son wish to leaves the school, but most of his teachers means, that an intelligent student should go to the university. He would try to get a carrier as a soldier.
