The Story of an Hour Synopsis

The story of an Hour is a short story about the woman Mrs, Mallard’s life. The short story was written in 1894, by the writer Kate Chopin who was known to depict the problematic lives women led. Kate Chopin was in particular known to explore the emotions women experienced at that time.

The Story of an Hour starts out with Mrs. Mallard receiving the message that her husband has deceased. This sets the stage for the exact thing Kate Chopin excels at, depicting the emotions of women, and their dilemmas.
At first Mrs. Mallard reacts by bursting into tears which is natural considering she has just lost her husband. She then decides to seek solitude in a room upstairs, so that she might fully realize what is happening. Upstairs Mrs. Mallard starts out mourning her late husband, however she notices a new feeling awakening, a feeling that she does not quite understand yet. At first she dismisses the new feelings awakening within her, but in the end she gets overwhelmed and realizes she is feeling freedom. The new feeling of freedom overwhelms her completely, and she feels a monstrous joy when she realizes that from now and on she is absolutely in control of her future. After having realized how much she values her newfound freedom, Mrs. Mallard thinking off her relationship with her husband, she admits that she did love her husband at times, however she has also realized that the freedom she has gained now means much more to her than the restrictive relationship she had with her husband. While Mrs. Mallard is enjoying her freedom and feeling better than ever she is suddenly asked to come out by her sister. Mrs. Mallard leaves the room upstairs she carries herself like a goddess of Victory, evidently to the reader she is extremely optimistic about her life from now on. What Mrs. Mallard is met with downstairs is none other than her late husband, or the husband who was thought to have deceased. Mrs. Mallard dies when she sees her husband has returned.
When the doctors came back they had come to the conclusion that Mrs. Mallard deceased due to heart disease – of joy that kills.

The Story of an Hour bears trademarks of what Kate Chopin specializes in, depicting the emotions of women at the time. The story gives us a clear insight in what situation wives were in, and the utter lack of freedom they had. The story portrays this, not by actually telling of her past with her husband, but by explaining the emotions and thoughts Mrs. Mallard has now that her husband no longer restricts her.
