-jeg er igang med at lave en stil om "The Whaler", det er en kort historie om en drengs forventninger til en hval fanger.
Tænkte på om i ikke gad at læse den igennem og hjælpe mig med at finde fejl mfl.
På forhånd tak.
The Whaler is a story that evolves around a boy’s expectations to his own imagination. When he meets a whaler by accident, which happens to be an idol of his, he soon findes out that the whaler is no more than a disappointment.
S e t t i n g
There are no specific signs or scenes in the storry that indicates the year, location or the time aspect. Nevertheless, is most likely that the story takes place in Ireland since both main characters have an Irish accent – line 44: ”I hear you’re a clever lad at school. Eileen Early tells me y’are”. When the whaler talks about how he had intercourse with Msr. Early, he mentions a hayfield and a byre – line 143-144: ”I rode her in the kitchen when he was lying upstairs and in the hayfield and in the byre. I never met a woman like that”. Those are to significant things that describes a farm, so the story must have taken place before the 1900s.
There are various characters in the story: the boy, the whaler, Mrs. Early who is the teacher and Jack who is Mrs. Early’s departed husband. However, it’s only the boy and the whaler that are the main characters in the story.
T h e N a r r a t o r
Since the boy is telling the story, we see it through his eyes and that makes him the narrator.
His knowledge about whalers are based on all the books he has read. Books that describes whalers as heroic figures, as gods among humans and carries the strength of Poseidon. He is under the asummption of all whalers being like the ones in the storys and that makes him very naiv and frustrated by his meeting with the whaler. His surroundings are all apart of an imagination that keeps him save from the cruel reality and that gives him the opportunity to use his own way of seing things, like the way he describes the town – line 8: ”He had left our town-land as a boy”. It shows a slight indication of him having a childlike behavior.
His meeting with the whaler is a reality punch. By the end of his metting, he findes out that the whaler is not near what he had imagined he would be like. Everything he thought he knew about whaling, did not matter anymore. Reality became a substitute for his imagination. In a way he grows from being naiv to understanding that not everything seems what they look like.
T h e W h a l e r
In the process of getting to know the whaler, the boy finds out among other things that he has never catched a single whale and that makes him a liar. Eventhough he has been deceiving everyone around him, he had to make people believe that he was a great whaler with a dangerous past of whaling. A myopic town like that needs a hero, they need something to believe in – line 80 ”But they want heroes here. It’s not enough to travel.”
The whaler is also a passionate person, he was afterall in love with Mrs. Early despite his vulgar way of speaking of her – line 143: ”I rode her in the kichen when he was lying upstairs and in the hayfield and in the byre”
