Familien Dobson bor I et gammelt hus nær kirken midt I byen. Frank D. er kaptajn og sejler mellem Oslo og Tyskland. Helene D. er husmor, men tre dage om ugen arbejder hun som bogholder. Hun arbejder kun den halve dag. Når Frank er hjemme, nyder de at gå lange ture sammen, enten i byen eller i natur. De har to sønner. Den ene går stadig i skole den anden er gift og bor i en anden by. Hans kone er sygeplejerske. De er nygift. De venter barn, og de synes, livet er vidunderligt.
