In this exercise, I have to analyse the short story and interpret it. Georg Orwell writes the short story “Shooting an elephant”. I will start with analyzing the text, where I will give a characterization of the main character and the people in the town. After that, I will interpret the text and give my own opinion. The text takes place in Lower Place, where the main character is a police officer, who have been teased by the people who lives in the town, and he was aimless. He thought that the sooner he got out of the job the better. After a period, the sub inspector of the police station contacts him, because an elephant was ravaging the bazaar. Then he went out to shooting the elephant. The course of events is realistic, the place were the short story takes place, is a full up city. There are many people, who were going after him, for looking at him, when he was shooting the elephant. We form a general view through out the course about the police officers personality and status. The police officer lack of self-confidence. He listens to the people’s opinion, and not to the logic. He is just dreaming that, the people like him, proud of him, and that he will become a hero in there eyes. They just called after him, when they needed help, but if he needs help, I do not think that the people would help him, on the contrary they would to resist him. I think the reason that let him shoot the elephant is, to get a higher status among the people. He thinks that, they always want to mention his name in front of the people. The people who live in the town are selfish. They are strange; they do not love other types of human.
