Under overskriften ”Indien, landet hvor man slår små piger ihjel” bringer det franske kvindeblad ”Marie-Claire” en rystende skildring af, hvordan et land systematisk søger at begrænse antallet af kvinder. Der er i de senere år oprettet en række centre, hvor de indiske kvinder kan få foretaget en fostervandsprøve. Men ingen venter de obligatoriske tre uger på at høre, om fosteret er normalt. Det er nok for de indiske kvinder at vide om det er en dreng eller pige. Er det en pige, får de foretaget abort – ofte af en kvaksalver, idet de ikke har råd til hospital. I forvejen koster det en månedsløn at få taget en fostervandsprøve. De kvinder der søger centnerene er dem der i forvejen har en eller to piger. Familien har ikke råd til flere, for det er så dyrt at gifte dem bort. Medgiften er enorm i betragtning af familiens indkomst. Organisationen ”womens center” i Bombay har undersøgt antallet af aborter, som har fundet sted efter fostervandsprøver i årene 1978-82.
