The Ballot or the bullet is a speech written by Malcolm X, a black civil rights fighter. The speech was given in Harlem in 1964. A year later Malcolm x was assassinated by an unknown murder.
Malcolm X was an Islamic priest; whom believed in violence as a political weapon in order to gain independence. In “the Ballot or the Bullet” He speaks to the black people of the United States as a nation. “The political philosophy of black nationalism only means that the black control the politics and the politicians in his own community” He references to rebellion in other parts of the world “the Russian revolution was bloody. The Chinese revolution was bloody. The French revolution was bloody. The Cuban revolution was bloody” by repeating these epiphoras Malcolm X makes it legal to use violence as a way of gaining a noble goal. The black audience is no longer only fighting for there civil rights; they are also fighting for basic human rights like any other suppressed nation in the world. Making this an issue of human rights Malcolm X forces the rest of the world to involve in this matter.

Malcolm X illustrates that America is in a unique position because she can choose• between “the ballot or the Bullet”. By referencing to America as a person, a she, Malcolm X gives a non-human subject human characteristics. America is now capable of making decisions; she can choose rather or not she wants to give American Negros there independence.

Malcolm X accuses UN of having double standards. On the one hand UN is pointing there fingers at other nations for abolishing human rights and on the other hand UN is overseeing as an example: bombed afro-American churches. “Whose little girls are being murdered. Whose leaders are being shot down in broad daylight” These statements are appealing to the audience’s emotions. By using pathos one of three modes of persuasion in rhetoric Malcolm X is creating a bond between the audience and there origin.
