This study investigates the American Civil Rights Movement and the racial segregation in the United States. With starting point in the speeches ‘I have a dream’, by Martin Luther King, and ‘The Black Revolution’ by Malcolm X, the movements ways of handling the racial problem, will be analysed. It is shown that there is a significant relationship between their rhetoric methods to point out their main goals. Yet they are different from each other if you look at their goals. Malcolm X requests complete separations of the races with self-defence if necessary, while Martin Luther King on the other hand, wishes/requests reconciliation of the races, by using non-violent demonstrations.
By looking at the book ‘The Autobiography of Malcolm X’, the methods and philosophy of Malcolm X, are analysed and interpreted, as a continuation of the speech ‘The Black Revolution’. It is shown that Malcolm’s view on the racial issue is marked by his childhood, and that he philosophically and methodically goes though three stages in his life – from ignorance to anger towards the white man and further to not judging a human being by looking at the colour of his skin but instead at his actions.
In the light of the analyses there will be drawn parallels to Hurricane Katrina 2005, to take a closer look on the results and consequences of the Civil Rights Movement. The result shows that the racial issue still exists in the form of poverty.
