"Det var dog utroligt" ? Øhh, nå! Hvad ville du gøre, hvis Studieportalen.dk ikke var her? Husk blot på, at alt herinde er frivilligt arbejde, så du kan ikke få hjælp hver gang.

Tror generelt du får mest hjælp, hvis du lægger dit essay ind i forummet.. :)

It is not easy to be the weakest person in a group of friends. The other people in the group ignore you and make fun of you like you have no feelings. For some people it is only a phase but there are also people who have to live with that role their whole life. Some of them try to get out of the group but there are also people who are to weak to break out and get a new life with a better role and new friends.
In the short story “First snow” we meet Maurice who is the weakest person in a group and the others in the group are taking their frustrations out on him.
We are not told very much about the narrator in the short story and we never get to know his name. It is his first time in prison. The narrator and four other men has a sort of a bond and to keep their group, they are constantly after the weak guy, Maurice. The narrator is a little bit difficult to interpret: sometimes it sounds like he feels sorry for Maurice: “I waited for someone to interrupt him” (p. 3, l. 61) “We must have watched him for five minutes. A hot emotion flooded me” (p. 3, l. 71) He wants to show him that he feels sorry for him but he hopes that someone else says something. He is afraid of showing his emotions because he thinks that it makes him weak and then he would be the weakest in the group: “had I been the weakest, they would have preyed on me” (p. 3, l. 41)
Maurice has a very hard time. He is the weakest person in a group of friends and therefore he is being teased very badly. He is black and he believes in God (Allah). He seems to be a very good person and he is not afraid of showing his emotions. The other guys in the group cannot tolerate that he shows his emotions. He knows that the other guys does not like him but it seems like he wants them to like him. He tells about his brothers death, who he loved very much, – maybe he wants them to comfort him – but they do only ask him to shut up. He do not know how he can be a part of the group with another role than the weakest.
Maurice is a good person and he believes in God. The color white symbolizes purity and innocence. Therefore I think that the white snow symbolizes Maurice and his purity and innocence.
In the end the narrator realizes what they have done and he knows that there is no way back: It occurred to me in my daze that just a few hours ago it had been autumn – late autumn, but not yet winter – and that now it was winter. (p. 5, l. 139-141)
Maurice is corned. It does not seems like he have trust in himself and maybe he thinks that he always will live with this pain. Like the woman in the photograph “Pain” by Carlos Tramm. It does not seems like the woman have trust in herself and she let the pain take over her life– just like Maurice.
Maurice has constant fear. He is afraid of what the others will do to him: “Maurice seemed to exist in a state of constant fear and agitation” (p. 3, l. 46) It does also makes him confused – as said before – he do not know how to act in front of the other guys and what to say to make them like him. In the text “The Beach” by Alex Garland the main character seems to be uncomfortable and do not know what to do. But in the end the main character has the strength to do what he was told and he finds out that is was not hard at all. Maurice does not have this strength to do what his heart and body is telling him – get away from these guys, they are not like you! So you can say that the main character in “The Beach” defeats the fear while the fear defeats Maurice.
If you want a new role to something better you have to show people that you have the strength. If you do not show strength you will remain in the same role forever. The weakest cannot survive anywhere – in the nature, in the sea and also in the “human world”. Maurice does not know how to show strength so he begins to cry in front of them and then everything goes wrong for him.

How do we tolerate violence?
If you think about it violence is a weird phenomenon. You beat another person – you hurt another person .. for what purpose? Pleasure? Revenge? And does anything good come out of it? No!
Our relation to violence is ambiguous: in the real life we dissociate us from the violence but in movies we are fascinated by the violence. It is like a horror movie – we do not want to look but we do it anyway because we want to find out what is happening.
But how does the violence influence the society? Lately there has been a lot in the media about violence and there has been so much focus on this subject that you nearly do not dare to walk outside alone. The violence makes people more and more uncertain and we have a hard time to trust people we do not know.
There are people who mean, that violence in the television or in the computer is unhealthy for the young boys because they cannot separate the real world from the computer games.
Young men and even children have started a new sick phenomenon “happy slapping”. They beat someone while they record the whole scene on their mobile phone and the they lay the scene out on the internet so everyone can see it.
We do not have to accept violence but we have to accept that it always will be a part of the world – it has always been here and will probably always be here.

The other people in the group - the other group members

but there are also people who - but others are too weak to break free
sort of a bond - sort of bond
-
keep their group, they are constantly after - keep the group together

The narrator is a little bit difficult to interpret - it is a bit difficult/ hard to interpret/see through

He wants to show him that he feels sorry for him but he hopes that someone else says something - He wants to show Maurice that he feels sorry for him but he hopes that someone else will say something

he is not afraid of showing his emotions. The other guys in the group cannot tolerate that he shows his emotion - his piers cannot accept the fact that Maurice is able to show his emotions eller noget lignende..

Maurice is corned - Maurice is cornered

he have trust in himself - has faith in himself

the woman have trust in - has faith/trusts and she letS

I stedet for weak person brug da underdog
