The setting is the court in the British city Liverpool in November 1993. Two 11-year-old school boys from one of the city’s poorest suburbs are on trial for the murder of the two-year-old James Bulger with thirty blows with an iron stick. Afterwards they left him on the rail tracks where a train ran over his lifeless body. Under the hearing the prosecutor asked: “What made you do it?” After a couple of silent minutes the answer was: “I don’t know.” Since the two boys had been sentenced to life in prison sociologists and psychologists have examined the boys’ childhood to find an answer.
