• What is rumspringa?:
The Amish people are traditionally very bound to their religious rules of the Amish community. This means, they go to church often and they forgo the use of cars, electricity, alcohol, modern clothes, and so on. The Amish kids live in a strict society and under tight control of their family since they get born. But when they turn about 16 years old, and get teenagers the rules change. They get the chance to undergo the rumspringa, which is a period, where they can live on their own and taste the “American way of life”, while they are excused from all the traditional rules of the Amish community.
• What does rumspringa give young people a chance to try?
The teenagers can choose to stay in their parents’ house during the rumspringa, or they can move out. For most of the Amish teenagers the rumspringa means a little exciting foray, a trip to the local cinema, or the amusement park or driving lessons. But for some other teens, the “bad guys”, the experience rumspringa is all about sex, drugs, fast cars and extremely wild parties and actually some of them become alcoholics, junkies and start to buy and sell drugs. The word, literally means "running around", in Pennsylvania German. It is a contraction of rum, an adverb meaning "around", and the verb schpringe, meaning "to run" or "to skip."

• Why do the Amish have the rumspringa?:

The idea with the rumspringa is, that the teenagers in the end of the period, are expected to choice between the American life and the Amish life. But if a teenager choices the American life rather than Amish life, he will be shunned from the Amish community. Which means his family and the Amish community will refuse to speak to him or associate with him ever again. They say, that the shunning for them is their last way of showing you that they love you. They think that you're breaking a promise that you made to the Amish church. They are actually afraid for your soul. Maybe you would think that no Amish teenager would come back to the Amish community, but what is astonishing is that almost all of them come back. In fact, more come back now than ever before! And for many Amish teenagers, just the threat of being shunned by their community is enough to tempt them back to the Amish community and lifestyle.

• Are there any problems about the idea – any good things?

But some other teens extend the rumspringa for many years, before they return home, it is actually most the “bad guys”, who “disappear” from their Amish societies for a long time. One of problems about the idea, is, as I said before, that some of the Amish teenagers make a lot of mischief, such as they take drugs, drink lots of alcohol, drive very fast and party extremely wild. All these things are among other things caused by, they completely don’t know what’s right and wrong in the modern world, and they don’t have parents to tell them – like we have! Because during the rumspringa, the Amish parents just have to turn a blind eye to their Amish teenagers, which results there is no curfew or any kind of modify for the teens. Therefore they can go to the mall, or they can stay all weekend long – there is no curfew or modify! All this can result in the Amish teenagers get a wrong and turn impression on the modern world.
But some other teens encounter those dangers and challenges in a more concentrated form, than the normal, “American” for two reasons:
First reason: they arrive at adolescence after childhoods that are far more sheltered than those of other children

Second reason: Some Amish teens begin the rumspringa journey carrying weighty baggage consisting of the moral imperatives, biblical precepts, and complex sets of rules that the community has imparted to them in their homes, at church, and in school.

• What do I think of the idea? – For normal people? – For Amish people?

I think the rumspringa is a great idea. It doesn’t have so much influence on the “normal” people. But the American girls, prefer the Amish boys, more than the American boys, because the girls mean, the Amish boys are stronger, better built and party harder, than the American boys. I also think, that some normal teenagers, get motivated by some of the Amish teenagers wildly behavior. I mean, some of the American teens, get inspirited to do the same dangerous and negative things, the Amish teenagers do. But I feel the rumspringa is a brilliant idea, for the Amish people. It gives them a chance to try the modern world, they can go to the cinema, they can be educated, they can in other words live an American life and in addition also choose between the Amish community and the modern world. If the Amish people did not have the rumspringa, I think they would spend a lot of time, thinking on how their lives would have been outside the Amish community and I think many of the Amish people would have a kind of rumspringa, that is to say, I think many people would leave the community for a little period, and then come back again. I also think it is therefore the Amish people have founded the rumspringa. I mean, I think in the start the Amish people did not have any kind of rumspringa, but little by little many people started to leave the community and comeback again, whereupon it got more and more traditional and more and more ordinary. After this I think, the Amish people fixed the specific period in their life’s, where they could try the world outside the Amish community, without having any kind of guilty conscience.
