The Runaway

“Going to be another hot day,” Hank Spano said to himself as he climbed out of his old red Buick and walked across the parking lot to his dinner. He fished a big bunch of keys out of his pocket, unlocked the back door and went inside. He switched on the coffee-maker and got donuts out of the freezer before he unlocked the street door and switched on the electric sign: Hank’s Dinner. “Yep, it sure is going to be another scorcher,” he said, standing in the doorway and looking up at the cloudless sky. It was just as he turned to go back inside that he first saw the kid. The kid was a little boy; his eyes were big and brown. There was something special in the way he looked at Hank. “Hello little man, what are you doing here so early? Are you the new boy, who brings me the Boston Globe, or?” Hank asked with a smile on his lips. It was a wonderful morning, the clock was about eight. Hank was in a good mood. “Nothing sir, I was just going to buy bread to my mom,” the boy answered. “Oh, I think that you are going wrong, Baker Wilson’s shop is on the corner of this street.” He said “Thanks!” and walked fast out of Hank’s shop. Hank thought that the boy looked thoughtful, but also confused, there was something in his eyes… Suddenly Hank lifted his head and looked at the window in the shop. The kid was walking at the sidewalk with a donut in his hand. Hank was able to recognize the donut, because it came from his freezer!! His initials; the H and the D in the green color were on it! He was sure, the boy had stolen a donut from him!!
