The Rose Tree

The text which I am about to analyse is a folktale called “The Rose Tree”.
The folktale deals with the problems that can arise between a stepmother and a stepchild.
The text has a lot of typical folktale characteristics. There is e.g. the structure, the motifs, the formality and the language. You can analyse the structure of a folktale through models of analysis. The 8 elements which are written out of “The Morphology of the folktale” which is a list of 31 different elements can be used to analyse folktales.
 

This is the 8 elements:
1. The main character, or hero, meets a problem
- The girl has to bring her stepmother the candles.

2. He or she sets out to do a task
- She is being sent out to get her stepmother a pound of candles from the grocers shop

3. He or she meets an opponent or a helper
- The girl meets the dog which runs away with the candles three times.

4. The hero has a test
- The stepmother ask her to lay her head down on her lap and therefore she test the girls trust

5. The hero is temporarily defeated and needs some sort of miracle
- The girl is subconscious defeated by the stepmother, because she is lying on her lap and she therefore is easy to beat

6. The hero uses e.g. three gifts in battles with the opponent - or does three tasks.
- First the stepmother ask her to fetch her at billet of wood, then an axe and then she has to lay her head down on the billet.

7. The opponent is beaten
- The stepmother dies when a millstone fell down on her head

8. The hero’s success leads to money, marriage and/or wisdom
- The girl hasn’t received money, marriage or wisdom. But she has received some sort of wisdom and money even though she is dead through her brother and father.

At first in the text there is a typical sentence for folktales; “There was once upon a time...“ Then there is the opposition of good and evil, and the opposition of life and death. In “The Rose Tree” is this opposition in figure of the girl, her brother and the dad for the good site and the stepmother and the dog is the figures for the evil site. The opposition life and death is shown through the whole story where the stepmother tries to get rid of the girl. Repetitions are also typical motifs in folktales. In this text the number of three which is a magical number is shown for several times. At first the girl buy tree bunches of candles, and when the little girl in the end lies on the evil stepmothers lap the stepmother ask her to do three things for her before the stepmother hit her with the axe. The number of three is also shown when the bird sings the song for three times and when the three men say the three words; “Stock!” “Stone!” “Dead!” and cry out to the bird together.
The level of formality and language in the text is very formal because there has not been used slang or other things that could make a text more informal.

We can try to understand the significance of the relationship between the girl and the stepmother with Sigmund Freud believes. He thought that a child about the age of four or five are directed towards the parent of the opposite sex. Through Freud’s believe is a girl attracted to her father and jealous of his mother. This believes is called the Electra complex. The Electra complex could be one of the reasons for the distance between the girl and her stepmother in the text.
