The picture shows a very chaotic railway station. Almost every object in the picture is tuned to “front” position. The setting could well be at any greater railway station in Britain.
The details in the picture are extraordinary. It makes the picture become interesting and vivacious.
The amount of details does also give us a clue on the time-period. The time setting is much likely to be in the middle of the 1800.
The picture portrays all sources of characters. Among them are three women dressed in white, probably travelling in order to attend a wedding. There are people greeting ore saying their goodbyes. As an example a women in yellow is kissing, what I suppose is, her son. The scene is very catching and sensitive and has the same kind of sentimentality and amount of details as in Dickens novels. Everyone looks optimistic and seems fond of the situation. This creates an atmosphere of expectations in the painting.
But even though the different characters differ from each other they also look very much alike. They are all very pale and the majority is wearing stunning earthly -collared clothes. The appearance of the crowd indicates the artificial ideal at the time. The clothes display that the women does not work, they are to pale and their clothes are much too difficult to work with. At this time the women was the extension of the man and the purpose of her was to make boys and to be seen and admired by other women, almost like a trophy
