Det blev superhurtigt, så jeg kan have overset noget. Der var en forkert ordstilling og så lige et enkelt missed ord.

After the birth where Nick’s father has to sew up the incision he has made, Nick doesn’t look at it because “His curiosity had been gone for a long time” (p. 3, l. 7). This is an understatement: Nick is the only person who has expressed compassion for the woman in labour opposite to his father and uncle. He simply cannot stand to watch and listen to the woman’s pain. Different from this (his father does) not seem to care. He even says that her screams aren’t important, so he just ignores them. Even though he is the doctor and has to help and respect his clients, a racist arrogance is shown, and it all just makes him feel exalted, like he was the one doing the hard work, and not the woman who is giving birth without any anaesthetic. The doctor’s arrogant behaviour shows again when he starts to operate on the woman: he asks George to remove the quilt “I’d rather not touch it” (p. 2, l. 33).
The fact that the doctor won’t touch the quilt might be a symbol of how he doesn’t want to have anything to do with this woman. “It” could easily be a patronizing description of the woman
