It was probably not a surprise that the Swedish Academy chose to award Nadine Gordimer the Nobel Prize in literature. The 68-year-old South African is not only one of our times best known writers she is also a passionate opponent of her country’s racial segregation policy and opposite many of her colleagues she has chosen to stay in South Africa during the apartheid regime.
Originally it was not the racial problems that provided the background for her literary works but more likely her dissociation from the white South African’s way of living in general.
During the years she has become more radical in a politician point of view and more obstinate in her opposition although her name is still connected with moderation and sober analysis.
For Nadine Gordimer there are two fundamental truths: One of them is that racism is reprehensible. No sacrifice is too big in fight towards it. The second is that writers has an obligation to write about the society they live in with commitment without getting the result to be pure propaganda.
