The article is written by Line Reeh in October 2001and is about why it is important for people in Nunavut to use cyberspace.
There are about 27.000 inhabitants, where 85% are Inuit, in Nunavut in north eastern Canada. They are (spread over=spredt over) a big territory on area with Western Europe and the transport happens through bots and snowmobiles. It is difficult for people from different societies to meet each others because of big distances and the rough climate. It is also a problem for children to find particular information in the books in libraries, where there are only 100 books. Therefore they had to visit one of the other libraries in the neighbour town but it would take over a week to go and come back again. If people in Nunavut had cyberspace there will not be a problem. People can communicate with each others through cyberspace and children can search after information in cyberspace.
Anne Mette Christiansen and Rikke Kolbech Andersen who have study cultural identity in cyberspace in Nunavut say that it is too expensive to use cyberspace because cyberspace connections goes through satellite because of the permafrost and therefore most of people use the cyberspace by schools, libraries and public places.
After Nunavut in 1999 get self-government, their own flag and their own parliament people needs to find their own identity. They begins to visit the web site PDF (a discussion forum), where they talk, discuss and define who you are.
A teacher in Nunavut says that cyberspace is important for people who lives there because it makes them proud of their cultures, about who they are and at least where they are from.
