Sunday in the Park
An analysis and interpretation
Sunday in the Park takes place as the title indicates in a park. In the park we get introduced to two very different types of families, one with a mom and Morton which is the dad and Larry who is their three year old son. Another with a dad and Joe which we assume to be the mans son. In the short story we first hear about how this family sits in the park a late Sunday afternoon where the city noises is muffled by the threes and the twillight sun shines. Their son Larry is playing in a sandbox with another boy, Joe.
This whole idyllic Sunday trip to the park suddenly gets interrupted and the conflict incident begins, when Joe starts throwing sand at Larry. Larry´s mother responds by shaking her finger, while searching for the boys guardian or parent. At first she doesn't seem to find anyone who has some kind of relation to the boy. One moment later the boy throws another spadefull of sand at Larry, this time Larrys´s
mothers, motherly instinct kicked in, she wanted to punish the boy now she said “ Don´t do that, little boy” and “You musn´t throw sand!” Now a man on a bench sitting not far from them expresses him self . From here Morton steps into character. Morton is a city pale man who works on a university. In the conflict between the two families Morton feels helpless and offended. These feelings is provoked by the way Morton is unable to protect and argue with this man who clearly doesn't understand the way to communicate in a civilized society. Due to the feelings that Morton has, he lets off steam towards his own son as they walk home from the park e.g; “If you cant discipline the boy I, will Morton snapped, making a move toward the boy” .
The way the man on the bench acts,”You go right ahead, Joe” he said loudly. “Throw all you want” this quotation tells us something about how indifferent he is about other peoples opinion. We could imagine that the man feels provoked by this happy nuclear family.
A conclusion on the comparison would be that the two families is each others complete contrast.
The children´s behavior is quiet passive during the whole episode, there are only two passages that the children is in focus. The first one is when Joe starts throwing sand, the other is when Morton decides that he have had enough of this whole fight at that point Larry is taken out of the sandbox “I don´t want to go home” he says while crying and kicking with hes legs.
The story ends when Morton decides to turn the other cheek to the man and leave the playground.
Even though Morton knows he did the right thing, leaving the playground, he still feels that he was not capable of protecting his family. This express itself when Morton as mentiont earlier makes an aggressive move towards Larry, ruining the non-violent mentality that he´d just shown his own son. His wife was chocked and replied with the exact same question as Morton got from the man, “You and who else?” With that she questioned his ability to protect his family, but alluded to that she was done supporting him if this was the way to solve things. Joe´s dad had managed to obtain his original purpose, causing disagreement among Morton and his family.
This text deals with two major themes. The first one is whether violence is morally correct in certain situations, and most important how should we handle this dilemma? The story that we are told pretty much comes up with the conclusion that it´s best to walk away with dignity.
The other theme can be explained by the question, why does the man on the bench react the way he does? Here we got too look at the different social groups. There are different things in the text that indicates what social layer each family comes from. The family contained by Larry´s dad and Larry. Larry´s dad is being presented as this lonely dad, as far as we know, with his son who lacks of proper upbringing, this tells us that
