Angels in America In 1991 Tony Kushner’s play Angels in America had it’s opening night on Broadway, where it became an instant success. The newspapers’ critics agreed that the American theatre had not seen anything like it since Arthur Miller’s legendary play of the fifties’, Death of a Salesman. Angels in America was Kushner’s second play, and it’s success took him quite by surprise. Some of the most prestigious literary awards of America were given to Kushner, whose play was also hailed as the best play in England that year. The play is divided into two separate parts, Millennium Approaches and Perestroika. The subtitles of the play “a gay fantasia on national themes”, and it describes AIDS’s effect on gay’s lives and theirs friends and relatives reactions. Kushner thinks that homophobia in the US and even in New York’s liberal Greenwich Village district is still very strong. However, the play can also be seen as a comment on modern lifestyles in today’s American society. That is what is new about Kushner’s play, for the AIDS theme itself cannot hold the publics attention for long. Tony Kushner was born in the state Louisiana, and now he lives in New York City. He describes himself as having had difficulties in declaring himself as being gay, and he has had difficulties in revealing his sexual orientation to the public. He started his theatre career as a student at Columbia University and New York University. He went on to become a critic at a theatre magazine and translated several classics, for instance Goethe’s Stella. Kushner’s debut as a dramatist was A Bright Room Called Day, which was a tremendous success on the West Coast, whereas theatre goer’s response on the East Coast was somewhat lukewarm. Kushner doesn’t conceal the fact that he’s a socialist and very much involved in politics. He’s very critical towards the 80s Reagan administration and the conservative approach to minorities in general and gays in particular. He claims that Reagan’s and other Republicans’ dream was to return to the happy days of the 1950s with theirs emphasis on moral innocence. It may therefore seem ironical that Kushner received a state grant to continue his work on the play about gays, Mormons, and Roy Cohn, the famous lawyer, who worked for Joe McCarthy in the 50’s in his crusade against Communists and died of AIDS in 1986. The result was Angels in America.

-Generelt er både engelsk- og amerikansktalende ret tilbageholdende med at bruge genitiv pluralis og anvender ofte en of-konstruktion i stedet.
Desuden: -Hvis dette er en amerikansk tekst, er "theatre" staver forkert.
