The 62-year-old  professor became world-famous when his scientist team created the clone sheep, Dolly.
This year is 10 years ago that the sheep Dolly came to the world. The birth was a scientific sensation which attracted international attention because Dolly was the World’s first cloned mammal.
A Scientist team from Rosilin Institute in Edinburgh made the successful cloning, which has been characterized as a breakthrough in stem cell research.

Dolly was thus born as a normal healthy lamb at 5th July 1996, and she was killed in 2003 because she had contracted an infectious lung disease. Professor Ian Wilmut was at the head of the Scottish scientist team, who created Dolly and since this he has been a prominent character within stem cell research.

Ian Wilmut, who leads Centre Development in Stem Cell Biology at the university in Edinburgh, is not only known as a pioneer in the genetic research. “For some people, any form of research involving human foetus is unethical, but it could revolutionize the way for the future in which they would be able to deal with a variety of diseases. We must be aware that fetuses are so early in their development, which means that we are not able to see them without a microscope.” said Ian Wilmut in 2004, where he as the first British scientist applied the authorities, which regulate genetic research, to be permitted to use human embryos, which consist of foetus cells, which they hope to use to cure serious diseases such as muscular dystrophy, diabetes and parkinsons, which today are incurable. “Embryo cells have the quality to develop into cells, which the body either lacks of or has got them only in damaged form.”
Wilmut has in addition to his scientific articles written several popular science articles on cloning, among other things in Time, New Scientist and Scientific American. In 2000 he co-authored the book “The Second Creation: Dolly and the Age of Biological Control”..
