Dear Debbie, Carlos, Said and Tom. March 4, 2010

Well let me first say that I really like this country, because there are a lot of things you can experience, and there are a lot of opportunities. Denmark has a beautiful nature that is well kept, and many castles and historical buildings, like “the little mermaid” in Copenhagen and H.C Andersen, who was by the way Danish. There are many things about Denmark that is great, like the health authorities, SU, and 1 year of maternity leave and many other things. Denmark is called “The happiest place on earth”. It is called that because people in Denmark are so happy with their lives. The people in Denmark are really nice They are always happy and they smile to you and greed you when you walk by. Being young in Denmark is one of the best things, for teenagers, because you can drink, and buy alcohol legally when you turn 16 years old. But you have to be 18 years old to buy tobacco and to drive. The young people are mostly interested in their education, but they also have fun with drinking and partying.

My name is Nour and I am 16 years old. I am from Iraq, but I and my family moved to Denmark when I was 6 years old. And I have been living in the country for 10 years now. When I first came to Denmark I didn’t expect that it would be such a free country. I thought it would be exactly like home, but I was truly surprised. People are so free in this country, and you can say whatever you feel like saying, as long as it don’t effect others.

In my school there are about 715 students. The Danish school system is very different than the American school system. The kids start in school when they turn 6 years. The students stay in the same school and in the same class for 9 years in a row. And then it’s up to the student. You decide which school and what education you want. If your grades are good you can go straight to what we call in Denmark for Gymnasium, which means high school.

I have never been in America. I don’t know much about life in America, but I know that there are lot of great buildings like the Statue of Liberty, The White House, and many other great things. I think life in Denmark is better than life in America, because if you don’t have a job, you will not get any money, but in Denmark, you will get help from the state, with finding a job and with financial problems.

I don’t know exactly what my plans for the future are, but I want to study as far as possible.

Sincerely Nour
