The story Irregularities by Courtney Jones is about a woman who works as an administrative assistant in a cardiac care unit. She tells us, that she has had an affair with whom she are assistant for – her boss James Soleander, M. D. which stands for Doctor of Medicine. The affair takes place on James Soleander’s desk where he is listening to the woman’s heart. The woman complains about her irregular heartbeats, and as a Doctor in the heart-area, James Soleander finds her heartbeat very interesting, actually he feels attracted to her heartbeat and one thing leads to another and suddenly there are having sex right there on the desk. After the affair she discovers that she has become pregnant. Her pregnancy comes unexpected, but she doesn’t regret the sudden upheaval in her life. She changes her lifestyle – she stops eating onions, she quits smoking, stop eating junk food and she gives up the beer drinking. Despite the good efforts she is told by her gynecologist that she might not be able to hold on to baby because of her malfunctioning belly.
Throughout the story she loves her boss even though he doesn’t take very much notice of her when they are at work. The woman is not sure how or when she should tell her boss about their mutual baby, because she knows that her boss already have a nice life with a beautiful wife who is also working at the hospital as an anesthesiologist. And to get bad to worse, this wife was actually a nice person to our woman – the main character. Therefore she ends up not telling her boss about the child, or at least that is how it ends.
