The middle-class in the U.S moved in the fifties and the sixties out of the cities to make the dream of a life in the suburbs come true. The idyllically picture of the nuclear family’s peacefully life, with a house, a garden and a car has changed for a lot into a nightmare of petrol fumes, asphalt and shopping centres. Most of the suburbs actually are fighting with the old citycenters traditional problems: poverty, violence and buildings in decay. However, the worst is that this development is ruining the fellow-feeling of Americans in the community.
For a long time there has been dissatisfaction with this, but first now in the nineties is there created a debate about the problem on a national level. The society can no longer afford the quickly increasing amounts for enlargement of the road system of the, fight against pollution, crimes etc., says the Bank of Americas latest report of the year. And architects and city planners recommends that America turns back to its cities before they disappear.
