Nogen der lige vil kigge det igennem for fejl.
In the picture “Gin Lane”, painted by William Hogarth, you can in the foreground see a woman sitting on some stairs. Her cloth looks very poor and she looks slovenly. Moreover she has bared her breasts. Beside the woman there is a little child who is falling over the banisters and takes a headlong dive. In the bottom of the stairs a man is sitting up against the banisters. His shirt is open and you can see his skinny body. His looks like he is starving and in one of his hands he has a glass.
At the end of the steps there is a kind of a square. To the left of the steps you can see two or three people how are munching some bones. Behind these people some other people stand and talking together while they carry different things, for instance some pots. It is probably the pawnbroker they talk to.
Behind the woman on the steps there is an open area, where you can see some people are buring a coffin. Behind the funeral there are some houses which looks like they are piled on each other.
In the right side of the picture you can see a rebellious crowd gesticulate who shouts and gesticulates. Above this crowd you can through a hole in a building see a man hanging down from a beam with a rope around his neck.
The colourless picture is painted like that you see the three people on the stairs from a bird´s eye view. In addition there is a lot of depth in the picture because the buildings in the background is very blurred.
The people in the picture they all look very dreary or frustrated like they can not see any solution on their hopless situation. The buildings in the right side of the picture also looks very poor because one of them is on the way to overturn, while there in the other is a big hole in the wall.
If you draw the golden section in the picture you will see that one of the lines cross the woman on the steps. When you first time see the picture you will probably also notice this woman as one of the most striking elements in it.
The atmosphere in the picture is very gloomy and deadly because of the many starving people and the funeral in the background, but the crowd in the right side of the picture makes it also chaotic.
There are a lot of symbols which substantiate the above-mentioned atmosphere, for instance the starving people, the hanging man and the funeral are a symbol of dead.
