Essay about “I Spy”
Graham Greene is the author of the short story “I Spy”, which first appeared in 1930. He spent his early life at Berkhamsted School where his father was headmaster. It occur that Graham Greene had a torrid time at Berkhamsted School having to balance between his father and his schoolmates all the time. His schoolmates might have regarded him as a traitor. Graham Greene was a person that they could not really trust because of his relationship to the headmaster. Treachery is one of the topics that appear in “I Spy” so Graham Green might also have considered himself as being a trai-tor.
a) Summary
The plot of this short story takes place in England during the Great War . The twelve-year-old Charlie Stowe wants to smoke a cigarette because boys at the County School mocked him because of his missing smoking experience. Though his mother was asleep Charlie moved with caution and tiptoed to the window. He was appalled but the thought of his father’s tobacconist’s shop tempted him. The little shop lay under a thin haze of stale smoke which would completely disguise his crime. Charlie knew it was a crime to steal from his father’s stock but he did not love him because he was dishonest. Tonight Charlie’s father had said to him that he would be in Norwich but you could never take his words for granted. It was dark in the shop but Charlie did not dare to turn on the light. He could hear the sound of several men walking briskly in the street and was old enough to know that something was about to happen so he crouched in the darkness. Three men came into the shop. One of them was his father but the other two men were unknown. His father offered the strangers a cigarette but they declined as they were on duty. When his father and the two men left the shop again Charlie Stowe tiptoed upstairs and got into bed. He wondered why his father had left the house again so late and who the two strangers were. He realised that his father actually was very like himself because he also was doing things in the darkness.
b) Analysis
The main character Charlie Stowe knows it is a transgression of the law to steal, especially from your own flesh and blood. However, Charlie does not like his father because he is unfaithful. His father is a kind of a ghost, a dim person who only notices him intermittently and leaves even punishment to Charlie’s mother. In those days it was a grotesque action to leave the punishment of the child to the mother, as it was a father’s job to spare the rod and save the child. So in many ways his father is a failure, a huge contrast to his mother, to whom Charlie feels a passionate demonstra-tive love. Charlie takes his father for a stranger but in the end of the story he realises that they have something in common. They do both use proverbs when they are trying to pull themselves together and in addition they are both attracted to the deeds of darkness.
The story deals with the problems in a father and son relationship. It is essential for a boy to have a father as a role model. A person you can look up to and ask how to behave in different situa-tions. The problem between Charlie and Mr Stowe is that they have no close relationship so Charlie cannot ask his father how to handle problems. Mr Stowe does not care enough for his son. In fact you can say that his lack of support to Charlie is an act of treachery.
Treason and spying is another theme that appears in “I Spy”. There are many things that indi-cate that the story is about this theme. The mood is tense and we hear about things that only happen in the darkness. Furthermore there are searchlights and “Huns” who lurks in Zeppelins . The title of the short story does naturally also inform us that it is about the above-mentioned dark deeds. In the end of the story Charlie wanted to tell his father that he loved him. However, it was too late because his father had to pay the price for betraying his country.
c) Evaluation
I find the story outstanding. Not just as entertainment but also because it gives food for thought. You do not have to yield to group pressure as Charlie did or spy as his father did. In other words there is always an alternative. Furthermore I believe there is a link between Charlie Stowe and the author. Graham Greene’s classmates could not trust him because of his father’s position as headmaster whereas Charlie’s classmates cannot trust him after his father was arrested for espio-nage. They are both stranded in the middle of nowhere…
