The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol
“The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol” is a song written by Bob Dylan. He describes how Hattie Carrol, a maid of the kitchen, is killed by the rich William Zanzinger.

The murder happens at Baltimore hotel, at a social gathering. It is described, how Zanzinger is twirling his cane around his diamond finger, then, without warning, he threw the cane, just because he “happened to be feelin’ that way”. The cane hits Hattie Carrol, and it is killing her. The cops are arriving at the Baltimore Hotel, where they take the cane from Zanzinger, and bring him in custody. After a few minutes, Zanzinger is walking around free – on bail. Later the court, which is described as a fair and equal court, judge Zanzinger for first-degree murder, and he gets a six-month sentence.

The song tells us, that Hattie Carrol is the mother to ten children, and a maid of the kitchen. She obviously belongs to the lower class . Hattie Carrol never sat at the head of the table, she never talked to the people at the table – she only cleaned up all the food from the table. “The table” is here used as a symbol of the upper class, a class which Hattie Carrol is not a part of. I believe Hattie Carrol is a black woman. She has a lot of children, which is typical for black people. She is poor, and never talks to the upper class – and she is definitely not a part of it. When she is killed, William Zanzinger only shrugs his shoulders, as it did not matter if she is alive or not – she is not valuable. A thing which, I am sorry to say is a typical though about black people to.

William Zanzinger is obviously a part of “the table”. At an age of only 24, he owns a big tobacco farm; he wears diamond ring and cane and is a part of social gatherings. William Zanzinger kills without reason , there are a bunch of witnesses, and William admit the murder – he does not have other opportunities. But, even though it is as wrong as it can be, even though he is a murder, he is let out on bail. Why? The answer is clear, he is rich, his parents are rich and they belong to “the table”. William Zanzinger believes that he more valuable than Hattie – her death does not matter to him. He is a white and rich man – this is the reason why he is let out on bail. There is no justice in this song; the persons are not equal!
The court is describes as equal court, but the fact is, that the court is not equal and fair at all! The court only judge him to a six-month degree – it is clear that he is the murder, but he only gets half a year – why? The answer is clear, he is a white rich man, and he only killed a black poor woman. The court is not fair at all! This is why Bob Dylan uses 6 verses to describe it – he wants to make it very clear to readers and listeners, that the court is everything else than fair. He is using irony.
It is also here the reason for crying is. We are not supposed to cry because of Hattie Carrol’s death, we are not suppose to cry because of the cold heart Zanzinger has – no, the reason for crying is the unfairness in world. Some people do believe that colours and wealth matters, that these things make a person valuable. The fact that some people think and believe in this is a reason for crying.
