Shinty
Most people today know what ice hockey, baseball and cricket are. But many people have never heard about the sport that they all have descended from. It’s called Shinty, and it’s an old Scottish sport. In the past it was very useful because the game was very good to improve the skills for the involved players, so they could become better as worriers. In the start there were no rules. There could be as many players on the pitch as possible, and it was allowed to tackle with the caman. It was okay to tackle with the body too, but only shoulder to shoulder. Later when the game got more civilized, only 16 players were allowed on each team. But it was still the team who had scored most goals, which would win the game. The ball they used is very similar to the baseball we know today. It was just a bit smaller than a tennis ball, but not as tiny as a table tennis ball. They used a curved stick called a caman to hit the ball with. The camans was often homemade, and a beautiful piece of work. Normally it was made out of a whole piece of ash wood, so the owner of the caman could shape it so it matched his own personal needs. Back then a clan or community could assemble a team, so they could compete against other community teams. The matches were set on festival days such as New Year’s Day. Some scotch people immigrated to Canada, and brought Shinty with them. In the winter, when the lakes were frozen, they played the game on the ice. So the ice hockey we know today, actually come from Shinty.
 

Through the time Shinty has improved and developed to a more organized sport. Some rules have been changes or adjusted/adapted. Now at days the pitch is significantly smaller, and only 12 players inclusive a goalkeeper is allowed on each team. Of course substitutes are welcome. The ball has also been changed. The material is like cork, and 2 pieces of leather is wrapped around the ball. Unlike the American baseball the seam on a Shinty ball is raised, and more pronounced. There are no rules about the color of the ball, but it’s usually white. The caman is very similar to the old model.
 

The game has gained more popularity around the world, but Scotland is still Shintys headquarter. Today there are leagues for both men and women, and more children is starting practicing Shinty. In Scotland they see Shinty as a growing sport, and hope that the world soon will see the possibilities in the game.
