The scene is the court in the British town Liverpool in November 1993. Two eleven year old school children from one of the poor suburbs are in the dock for the killing of the two year old James Bulger with 30 strikes of an iron bar. Afterwards they left him on the railway tracks, where a train ran over his lifeless body. During the hearing the prosecutor asked one of the boys: “what made you so?” after a few silent moments is the answer: “I don’t know.”Since the life sentence for the two boys, sociologists and psychologists have been trying to probe deeply into the boys childhood to find an answer. Which looks like a sad, predictable pattern of two children hand over in the shopping centre as a pass time, with problems in the school and diverging and careless parents.
But most shocking for the psychologists, which for years have rejected, that there is a sort of connection between video films and violence reveals inspections, that Child play 3 almost had a cult wise status for the two boys. The film is considered as one of the most brutal violent film, which is produced so far. People are abused, beating up, and slaughtered in bloody horror scenes. And where the 1950 test of manhood among boys in the British suburbs consisted of smoking a cigarette and long splitting, in 1990 it consist of seeing Child plays 3 with stone face and imitate the film scenarios in play and behavior. For the two Liverpool boys the limit between play and reality had disappeared. Their parents had in own comfort let the video recorder assumed the responsibility for the Childs upbringing. The decisive break with the scientists belittling of violent videos came in the past week, where an ordinary report from 25 prominent experts recommit tougher restrictions against violent film. The main argument in the report for the connection between video and violence is, that other elements as poverty, family crises and school problems have existed for decades without any explosion in the cynical youth violence. It has first made its entry at the same time as the videos spreading.
Children, there are living in a healthy surroundings with many impulses, is hardly damaged by the videos. They are capable of adapting it and sort out. Different is the situation with other children, which are either suffering under shipwreck in the house or school. The advice from the British scientist to the parents are that they have to watch and check which videos the children are borrowing- and secure that the friends parents do the same.
