Analysis of “Hills like white elephants”
“Hills like white elephants” is a short story written by Ernest Miller Hemingway (21.7.1899 – 2.7.1961). Hemingway was an American writer and he was born in Oak Park in Illinois. He was, besides his works, known for the iceberg theory.
In 1927 Ernest Hemingway published the short story “Hills like white elephants”.
Before reading the story it is important to note that “white elephants” also means an expensive but useless thing.
The story takes place at a train station in a valley called Ebro. The main characters in the story are a man and a woman, we don’t know the name of the man but in the short story he is called the American and the woman is called Jig.
While waiting for the train to Madrid, the American and jig are having a normal mundane conversation. But because of an operation which jig would go through, the mundane conversation develop to a minor quarrel.
By reading between the lines you can tell that jig is pregnant. But also when reading this:
They sat down at the table and the girl looked across at the hills on the dry side of the valley and the man looked at her and at the table.
‘You’ve got to realize,’ he said, ‘that I don’t want you to do it if you don’t want to. I’m perfectly willing to go through with it if it means anything to you.’
‘Doesn’t it mean anything to you? We could get along.’
‘Of course it does. But I don’t want anybody but you. I don’t want anyone else. And I know it’s perfectly simple.’
‘Yes, you know it’s perfectly simple.’
After she gives birth to her child she wants to settle down with the American, but the American wants her to abort the child when he says:
‘It’s really an awfully simple operation, Jig,’ the man said. ‘It’s not really an operation at all.’
In this situation Jig’s unborn child will be a white elephant, a useless object that may be expensive to own and maintain, Seen from the Americans point of view.
The quarrel ends with Jig saying:
‘Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?’
They are told that there are 5 minutes to the train arrives.
Before the train arrives he picked up the two heavy bags and carried them around the station to the other tracks. This is a sign that he do not want to settle down, but he wants to continue as before.
When he returns to jig, he asks:
‘Do you feel better?’ he asked.
‘I feel fine,’ she said. ‘There’s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine.’
I think that Jigs acting polite because she doesn’t want to talk about the baby right now, she just want to Madrid, take a nap and then talk about the baby. Right now she does not have what it takes to persuade him to settle down, because he is good at manipulating her.
Some of the themes could be:
• Egoism
• Selfishness
• Charity
• Responsibility
