a) Comment on the plan of white society “...to keep the kid (N´goola) away from the natives so that she can forget she ever had anything to do with them.” (p 42)

The plan of the white society was to keep N’goola from the natives so she can forget she ever had anything to do with them. N’goola was a half-caste. White society took the half-caste children from their homes, and sent them to the Methodist and other homes.

The half-caste children, wasn’t aloud to have any kind of contact with natives, they were given new names and raised as white people. The children supposed to forget of everything of being aborigines.  N’goola was named Mary, and with time she forgot about her origin.

The plan of white society to ‘’keeping her away from natives so she ever had anything to do with them’’ succeed.

b) Describe Mary´s/N´goola´s conflict in having to live in a no-man´s land between two cultures.

N’goola was taken away from her home amongst the aborigines by soldiers, when she was very young. She was raised and educated in a mission school with the intention that she, and the other half-castes should become integrated in the white society. She lived on the outskirts of the society until her father found her. She had to choose between her desire to live as a white woman and her loyalty to the Aboriginal traditions. The choice was difficult, but she acknowledged her black ancestors.

c) Comment on the status of the outsider, referring to Mary and Nikolai of the two short stories.

Being an outsider is not easy, if person doesn’t belong to a particular group, set, party, etc.: the society often regards the person as an outsider.

If you don’t look like others, it could be your appearance or personality; there is a big chance that you may not be accepted in the society. In the story we see the same problem about N’goola/Mary; she was rejected by white and aborigines people, only because of her looks, although she was a part of both cultures. Mary’s lived white people lifestyle, but they still did not accept her, because she wasn’t white.

Nikolai was rejected because he was a slightly different from others, the way he sing and act, was too much to handle, for the native people, even though he did not meant any harm.
