When the easy life becomes a nuisance

More and more people are getting posted at workplaces in other countries. A position which requires you to move far away is most likely well paid, and because of this, the rest of the family who is moving along, don’t have to work or worry about financial problems. Of course they are attracted to this opportunity of an everyday life filled with luxury and relaxation. But we all know happiness can’t be measured by the money you make, so, is this really the good life? Or, as it is written in the article ”When the easy life becomes a nuisance”, printed in the magazine ”Alt for damerne” 6 of July, 2000; what happens when ”spare time ends up becoming a problem?”

In the article we hear the story of Dorthe Werner, a 33 year old engineer, wife and mother of two. When Dorthe´s husband was offered a job in Hong Kong the family chose to grasp this uniqe opportunity and experience something completely different then their normal everyday life. Dorthe quit her own job, and the family was off to Hong Kong.
In the beginning everything went smoothly. Dorthe was kept busy all day doing everything that needs to be done when you move some place new. But as time passed by she started to get bored. She constantly felt guilty and on top of that she also felt superfluous. She was use to making her own money, and now she just did nothing all day while her husband was working. She attended all sorts of activities in attempt to make her situation more cope able, but it didn’t work. The environment for the posted families was very maleorientet and this also strengthened her feeling of inferiority.
Dorthe was on the verge of packing her bags, when a part time job came to her rescue. The job provided her with peace of mind and something else to think about beside her familie. It made her life in Hong Kong much easier.
